What you need to know about Plitvice National Park

Plitvice Lakes are the oldest and the largest national park in Croatia. It was proclaimed the first national park in Croatia in 1949 and since then thousands and thousands of tourists came to witness its stunning nature miracle. Its popularity especially grew after the Plitvice Lakes received international recognition in 1979 and got on UNESCO World Heritage List. The National Park area expands on area of 300 km2 and the lake chain consists of 16 lakes. The lake system is divided into Upper and Lower Lakes. On Upper lakes you will discover Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Big lake, Little lake, Vir, Galovac, Milino lake, Gradinsko, Burget and Kozjak. The Lower lakes will enchant you with four more lakes- Milinovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod. Plitvice Lakes are all connected by scenic wooden paths and hiking trails, all together available for visitors through the whole year.

One of the most beautiful waterfalls on Plitvice – the waterfall between Milanovac and Gavanovac is called ‘Milka Trnina’ by Croatian famous opera prima donna.

The lakes are filled with crystal blue water, and they get water from numerous small rivers and streams.

Most people will choose the summer time to visit Plitvice Lakes, but the Park is enchanting at all seasons of the year. It is hard to say when it is the best time to visit Plitvice Lakes because each period carries its magic.

A couple of centuries ago the Plitvice Lakes area on the maps was labeled as ‘Devil’s Garden’, it is not known why, but it is assumed that the reason is the fact that this area was border with the Ottoman Empire.

There are over 1460 plant species and subspecies in the Park, which make up about 30% of the total Croatian flora. There are a lot of endemic species too.

The park is a home to many animal species, from river and stream crabs, 321 butterflies species, fishes like trout, chub, pickerel, 12 species of amphibians and reptiles, over 163 bird species, 58 species of mammals, there are 21 species of bats and the Park is also home for bears, wolves, lynx and otter.

The legend about the origin of Plitvice Lakes says that after the great drought the Black Queen from the mountains came, and sent rain and thunder to the exhausted people and that is how these beautiful 16 lakes arose. It is believed that if there was no Black Queen, there would be no Plitvice Lakes.
